Deals instead of justice? Ukraine’s integration into a future Europe

Deals instead of justice? Ukraine’s integration into a future Europe2026-06-16T16:44:44+02:00

The war of aggression against Ukraine has not only security implications but also far-reaching legal and institutional consequences for Europe. What role does the law play at a time when geopolitical interests and political imperatives often take precedence over long-term procedures under international and European law? How can the principles of the rule of law be upheld when swift decisions are required? And what standards apply when a country scarred by war is to be integrated into the European community of states? In her lecture, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Angelika Nußberger, M.A., a renowned expert in international and European law and former judge at the European Court of Human Rights, explores these complex questions in depth. Using Ukraine as an example, she analyses how the relationship between law and politics is being rebalanced in times of fundamental upheaval – and what this means for the future of Europe. The lecture invites reflection on the limits and possibilities of the law in a crisis-ridden Europe – and on the conditions for the fair, sustainable and law-based integration of new member states.

There will be an opportunity for discussion following the lecture.
